Yes, I have lied about my age! And it was to a policeman! I must have been about 15 or 16 and in a pub in Echuca (I may even have been 14!).
Going to the Echuca dances was the IN thing then. We used to get to Echuca reasonably early after getting a lift with someone (anyone who would take us 🙂 ). The dance started at about 8.00pm but no one wanted to be the among the first ones there so it was usual to go and have a few drinks at the pub before going to the dance hall. It was a good icebreaker and helped settle the nerves before the big event.
As I was reasonably tall for my age I was always able to get away with saying that I was older than I was. The police didn’t really seem to fussed about it, to be honest. This was around 1970 and drink driving and under age drinking didn’t get the publicity it does today. I certainly wasn’t going to be driving anywhere anyway.
I think I can honestly say that I have never lied about being younger than I actually am. I can’t see the point in that and I don’t hesitate in telling people my age – I am now 56 years old. I don’t feel that I have ever been discriminated against because of my age. Sometimes younger people can be patronising but they will get older themselves one day and hopefully realise how silly they were.
Cheers for now
