The Enormous Purple Thing

Today I went to the my first creative writing meeting. There were about a dozen of us there – all ladies of a certain age! The group is coordinated by the University of the Third Age (U3A).

After a brief introduction and a few handouts, the timer was set to 45 minutes and we started to write. There were three topics to choose from as follows:

1. Write about yourself

2. Start with … I opened my eyes and …

3. Must include the following: purple, enormous and furniture.

I chose the third option and here is what I wrote …

As I drove home along Bussell Highway, I caught a glimpse of something purple in the sky. It was enormous but I had to focus on the road as the traffic was busy as schools were closing for the day.

I decided to get off the Highway and so pulled into Holgate Road and drove towards the ocean where the visibility was much better and there was very little traffic.

I was a little afraid, but more excited than anything. The enormous, purple object was getting much closer to ground level. It was bigger than a Jumbo Jet. I started to discern its shape and I couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked like a chest of drawers – an enormous, purple, chest of drawers. I pinched myself as I thought I must be dreaming, but no, I WAS awake.

A crowd started to gather. What was it really? Nothing made sense. It came within metres of the shoreline – we were all breathless with anticipation. But then – it was gone in an instant and we were left stunned and confused.

The next day it was in the papers – it was the State Government’s latest shark mitigation strategy …

NB.This may give some context if needed 🙂 Shark mitigation strategy finds resistance

I think I am going to enjoy this writing group. There is no critiquing of each others work – it is about having fun writing 🙂
