Writing a memoir

I would like to write my memoir one day. I am currently collecting information and advice as to how to go about it. I have scoured my blog for passages that can be included. I have also read several memoirs to learn how writers tackle it.

My intent is to gather snippets of information/memories until I feel I have a good mix and quantity of quality information.

The purpose of this post is to glean advice and guidance from fellow bloggers. I am sure many people have travelled this road before me and will have some good advice of what to do or not do.

How would YOU go about it? Please share your thoughts/tips with me πŸ™‚

  1. My advice, is to write a skeleton of the story with every petinent bit in it that you can recall with ease. Forget about absolute details, don’t worry about place names etc, just write a first draft. Build it up like an artist would, layer by layer, and you will recall stuff as you go along, memories trigger memories.

    • Thanks Ruth! Your are right in what you are saying. I used to have the byline “if you want to write, just write!” I don’t think it will be completed for a little while yet πŸ™‚

  2. Oft a contrarian, I would simply write, Raineee, without any template, format or pre-ordained notion of what it ought to resemble. Your words are your story. Telling it as only you know it seems the best base and source to me.
See what happens when you invite input? πŸ™‚

  3. I haven’t read any of the other comments so forgive me if I say something someone else has. I’ve often wondered if it’s not vane to write a memoir. However, I think I have inadvertently been writing mine for the last few weeks, or even years.

Firstly, I have often said that one day my great grandchildren could look at my blog to see how we lived in the early 21 century. Is that not a memoir of sorts? So, use what you have… expand on it and fill in gaps, with colour and mirth.

Secondly, I’ve had a bit of a health scare in the last month or so. That made me jot ideas down on paper… well, on virtual paper. What I’ve allowed to happen is my thought processes to follow their own path. I use the stimulus of music, to bring back memories… I use one thought to lead to another and in so doing, when the tale runs it’s natural course, I may have something that may be called a memoir.

Just write… let it flow! Do like Hemingway said… sit at the typewriter and bleed! πŸ˜‰

Good luck, your life has been interesting and rewarding so it seems totally right to write!! πŸ˜€

    • Thanks Vossey! I appreciate the thought you have put into the response. I love the suggestion to use the stimulus of music to get the memories flowing. I am sure that will work well for me too. PS I hope the health scare was a false alarm :-).

      • I’m not sure on the health scare… more tests to be done. Look like the worst case scenario is not on the cards at the moment!

Mostly, enjoy your writing!! Have fun… and shed the odd tear as well!! πŸ˜‰
